Paper tape gains its strength from being fully embedded in a continuous bed of joint compound rather than simply covering the seam. Enough compound must remain beneath the tape to create adhesion without leaving excessive material that forms a ridge. Removing too much bedding compound can produce dry spots or bubbles that compromise the reinforced joint.
Self-adhesive fibreglass mesh has an open grid that allows compound to pass through and mechanically lock around the reinforcement. Because mesh behaves differently from paper under joint stress, it is commonly paired with a compatible setting-type compound rather than ordinary drying compound for the initial coat. Product requirements determine where mesh is appropriate instead of treating the two tape types as interchangeable.
Paper tape used at an inside corner is creased along its centreline so each half reinforces one adjoining gypsum plane. Compound coverage and tape positioning must maintain the actual corner rather than gradually rounding the intersection. Tools such as corner rollers and angle heads can improve consistency across numerous corners while hand finishing remains useful at short returns and three-way intersections.
Locations where two walls meet a ceiling bring several taped joints together within a small area. Excess compound accumulated from each adjoining seam can distort the intersection and make the corner appear uneven. Sequencing the joints and controlling build-up at these three-way intersections keeps each plane distinct while maintaining continuous reinforcement through the connected seams.

The first compound application establishes the base beneath joint reinforcement rather than the final wall profile. Compound must provide continuous contact beneath paper tape while leaving enough room within tapered joints for later coats. Controlling this initial thickness reduces trapped air, excessive shrinkage and unnecessary build-up before subsequent applications begin.
After the reinforced joint has set or dried, additional compound fills the depression formed by adjoining factory-tapered edges. Each application extends beyond the previous coat while maintaining the surrounding gypsum as the reference plane. The objective is to fill the recess progressively rather than create a raised strip directly over the tape.
Ready-mixed drying compound hardens as water evaporates, so coat thickness, temperature, relative humidity and ventilation affect turnaround time. A surface can appear lighter and dry while deeper material still contains moisture. Applying another coat prematurely can extend overall drying and increase the chance of shrinkage becoming visible later.
Sanding removes minor ridges and tool marks rather than reshaping an incorrectly built joint. Excessive sanding can expose tape, remove too much compound or abrade the gypsum-board face paper beside the seam. Using controlled pressure and directional lighting makes high spots easier to identify while preserving the intact surface needed for the final paint system.

Butt joints bring two square panel ends together without the recessed profile found along factory-tapered edges. Because the tape and compound necessarily sit above the original board plane, the finishing area must extend substantially farther onto both sheets. A broad, gradual transition makes the unavoidable build-up visually disappear rather than attempting to make the centre of the seam physically flush with untouched gypsum.
Renovation layouts and irregular sheet dimensions can create joints where a square-cut panel edge meets a tapered factory edge. The two sides do not accept equal compound thickness, so finishing must compensate for their different profiles. Building the shallower side appropriately prevents the completed joint from leaning visually toward the non-tapered panel.
Small wall returns beside doors, closets and intersecting partitions can leave little space for conventional wide finishing passes. Compound placement must account for nearby corners and openings without allowing several finishing zones to accumulate into one thick area. Smaller knives and controlled applications are useful where full-width finishing tools cannot maintain the required wall plane.
Windows and fixtures that cast light nearly parallel to a wall or ceiling can exaggerate small ridges that would be difficult to see under diffuse illumination. Joint profiles in these locations are checked with directional light before final sanding so remaining tool marks or abrupt transitions can be identified. This improves ordinary joint finishing without extending the work into a full-surface Level 5 skim coat.
All-purpose compound can be used through multiple finishing stages, while dedicated taping compound is formulated with stronger bonding characteristics for embedding joint tape. Topping compound is generally easier to feather and sand during later coats. Using compounds according to their intended stage can improve joint strength while reducing unnecessary sanding during final surface preparation.
Coverage varies by product, board layout and finishing method. As a general manufacturer planning figure, an 18 kg (40 lb) carton of ready-mixed compound may cover roughly 40–45 m² (430–480 ft²) of gypsum board through a conventional multi-coat joint-finishing process. Butt-joint frequency, corner quantity and application thickness can substantially change actual consumption.
Bubbles usually develop where insufficient compound remains beneath part of the tape, preventing complete adhesion to the gypsum surface. They can also occur when compound begins drying before the tape is properly embedded. Once a void forms beneath the tape, applying additional compound over its surface does not bond the unsupported section underneath.
Exact requirements depend on the compound manufacturer, but many gypsum finishing systems require the building, board and joint-treatment materials to remain at approximately 10°C (50°F) or higher during application and drying. Regina winter projects may therefore require reliable interior heating before taping begins rather than assuming an enclosed building is warm enough for compound to perform correctly.
Sanding leaves fine gypsum and compound particles loosely attached to the finished surface. Excess dust can interfere with primer contact and contribute to an inconsistent surface if it is simply painted over.
